50 Years of Impact: The Power of a Lasting Gift
Walter and Joan Flewelling turned a lifetime of service into enduring support for future generations.
In Saint John’s north end, people remember Joan Flewelling as someone who always put others first. It wasn’t just something she believed, it was how she lived.
Together with her husband Walter, Joan built a life grounded in faith, family, and an unwavering commitment to their community. Married for 56 years, they raised four children and built a legacy that extended far beyond their own family, one rooted in service, leadership, and generosity.
As a teenager, Walter was already an entrepreneur. He was delivering newspapers, selling magazines, and running his own small business before finishing school. He would go on to become President of Willett Fruit Company Ltd., leading a successful career in the food industry. Joan Flewelling was a devoted wife, mother, and community member who played an active role in the Church of the Good Shepherd and local organizations. But success, for both Joan and Walter, was never just about business, it was about what you gave back.
Both Walter and Joan were involved in countless community organizations across Saint John. They believed strongly in the role of education, healthcare, and local leadership in building a thriving community. They were also passionate advocates for higher education in Saint John and admired the growing strength of the University of New Brunswick Saint John campus, particularly its MBA program.
In 2008, with that vision in mind, the Flewellings established a fund with the Greater Saint John Community Foundation. Their goal was simple but powerful: to invest in future leaders. Following Joan’s passing in 2010 and Walter’s in 2012, their legacy gift ensured the fund would grow, creating the first MBA scholarship at UNBSJ, awarded beginning in 2013.
Today, the Walter and Joan Flewelling Memorial Scholarship provides at least one annual award to a full-time MBA student from the Saint John region. It's given to someone who demonstrates not only academic excellence, but also leadership and meaningful community involvement. It reflects the very values Walter and Joan lived every day.
And that impact is being felt.
“My name is Ashley Vaughan, and I am the 2021 recipient of the Walter & Joan Flewelling Memorial Scholarship,” she wrote. “It can’t be stressed enough how much your contributions benefit and encourage us as students… Thank you for helping me grow into the successful person I have always dreamed of becoming.”
For Ashley, the scholarship meant more than financial support. It created opportunity, opening doors to hands-on experience, building confidence, and shaping a future career right here in Saint John.
That’s exactly what the Flewellings intended.
They believed in building something that would last. Not just for their family, but for generations of students they would never meet, young people with potential, ambition, and a desire to contribute to their community.
Through their fund, that belief lives on.
Each year, a new student steps forward and a legacy of generosity continues to grow.
