50 Years of Impact: One Person Can Change the Conversation
How Bill Gale helped make poverty reduction a Saint John priority
Some legacies are measured by what people build. Others are measured by what they inspire others to do. Bill Gale's legacy is both.
After a successful career in banking that saw him rise from junior clerk to Vice President of Operations for Royal Bank in New Brunswick, Bill could have enjoyed a quiet retirement. Instead, he turned his attention to one of Saint John's most persistent challenges: poverty.
In 1997, Bill was deeply moved by the story of a local person struggling to survive in poverty. Rather than viewing it as someone else's problem, he saw it as a call to action.
He began bringing together business leaders, professionals, and community members around a simple but ambitious idea: poverty reduction required more than charity. It required leadership, collaboration, and a commitment to addressing root causes.
That vision became the Business Community Anti-Poverty Initiative (BCAPI).
What started as a conversation grew into a movement. Under Bill's leadership, BCAPI encouraged Saint John's business community to engage in poverty reduction not as a short-term project, but as a long-term community responsibility. His message challenged people to look beyond alleviating hardship and toward creating opportunities for lasting change.
One of the barriers Bill recognized was access to education.
Too many capable young people were graduating from high school with the talent, determination, and potential to succeed, but without the financial means to continue their education. Bill believed that circumstance should never determine a person's future.
In 2010, BCAPI established the Bill Gale Bursary to honour its founder and long-serving chairperson. The bursary was created to help Saint John students pursue post-secondary education when financial barriers might otherwise stand in their way.
The program reflected Bill's belief that communities thrive when people are given the opportunity to reach their full potential.
In 2012, stewardship of the bursary was entrusted to the Community Foundation, ensuring the fund could continue supporting students for generations to come.
Today, the Bill Gale Bursary Fund continues to provide educational opportunities to young people who demonstrate determination, promise, and financial need. Each bursary represents more than financial assistance, it represents confidence in someone's future.
For fifty years, the Community Foundation has partnered with donors and community leaders who believe in creating lasting change. The Bill Gale Bursary Fund is a powerful example of how one person's vision can inspire a community and open doors for countless others.
Bill Gale believed Saint John could do better.
Through the students who continue to benefit from his legacy, that belief lives on.
