Honouring Community Legacies Through Education

Celebrating students, remembering leaders, and building brighter futures

The Nauwigewauk Education Foundation Inc. (NEFI) was established in 2002 with a simple but powerful purpose: to support post-secondary education for students from the Nauwigewauk and Darlings Island area. Over the years, the Foundation has awarded bursaries that not only ease the financial challenges of higher education but also carry forward the legacies of two beloved community members — Grant Beyea and Joe Thompson.

This year, two local students were recognized for their hard work and determination as they prepare to continue their studies.

The Grant Beyea Memorial Bursary, valued at $1,000, was presented to Courtney Gagnon. Grant was one of NEFI’s founding members, remembered as a devoted husband, father, and friend whose commitment to community was unwavering. This bursary ensures that his dedication to helping others continues to shape young lives.

The Joe Thompson Memorial Bursary, also valued at $1,000, was awarded to Curtis Price. Joe was a respected educator and administrator, admired for his mentorship and deep family and community ties. This bursary stands as a fitting tribute to a life spent encouraging and guiding others.

At a special celebration in Nauwigewauk, Wallace Floyd, Pat Hanratty, and Chelsea Ferris presented the awards to Courtney and Curtis, surrounded by community members proud to see these legacies endure.

Through these bursaries, the stories of Grant and Joe live on — inspiring the next generation and reminding us of the lasting impact of investing in community and education.
