A Legacy of Remembrance
Carrying Forward Noël Kinsella’s Vision Through the Naval Memorial Fund and the HCapt(N) Noël Kinsella Memorial Bursary
Some people leave a mark not because they seek recognition, but because they care deeply about remembrance, service, and community. Noël Kinsella was one of those people.
Noël worked tirelessly to ensure that those who served at sea—and those who never came home—would never be forgotten. The Naval Memorial along Harbour Passage exists because of his determination, his persistence, and his belief that remembrance matters. He raised the funds, rallied support, and gave his time so that future generations would always have a place to pause, reflect, and remember.
On May 15, 2019, representatives from the Royal United Services Institute of New Brunswick, HMCS Brunswicker, and the Community Foundation came together to permanently establish the Naval Memorial Fund. In many ways, this Fund is a continuation of Noël’s work—a promise to care for what he helped create.
The Fund ensures the ongoing maintenance of the Naval Memorial, which commemorates the Battle of the Atlantic and honours all those who lost their lives while serving their country at sea in the cause of peace. It stands as a quiet, powerful reminder of sacrifice—and of Noël’s unwavering commitment to honouring it.
Just as importantly, the Fund looks forward. Through the HCapt(N) Noël Kinsella Memorial Bursary, we support young people who are following a path of service themselves—students from HMCS Brunswicker and New Brunswick–based Sea Cadet units pursuing post-secondary education.
In this way, Noël’s legacy lives on. Every bursary awarded and every moment of remembrance at the Memorial reflects the values he lived by: service, dedication, and respect for those who came before us.
This Fund is more than an endowment. It is a thank-you. It is a salute. And it is our promise that the legacy he built—through service, perseverance, and care—will endure.
