50 Years of Impact: Moms in Gear

Looking back on a Community Service Award recipient whose compassion and community spirit reach far beyond the rink

In 2017–2018, the Community Foundation recognized Moms in Gear with the Community Service Award (Group Category), a celebration of their outstanding contributions to community health and well-being in Greater Saint John.

As part of this recognition, the group directed a $5,000 grant to Outflow Ministries’ dental clinic, in partnership with the St. Joseph’s Hospital Community Health Centre. The clinic provides free dental care to those who need it most...removing barriers and restoring dignity, one smile at a time.

The gift was made in memory of their teammate and friend, Dr. Cindy McCormick, a respected dentist and a driving force behind the clinic’s creation. Cindy’s legacy lives on not only in the care provided to the community, but in the spirit of compassion and action that Moms in Gear continues to carry forward.

But Moms in Gear’s story began long before this recognition.

More than a decade ago, a group of active, professional women came together to share their love of hockey. What started as a weekly opportunity to hit the ice quickly grew into something much more, as the group began raising funds to support their community.

Over the years, Moms in Gear turned passion into purpose. From supporting breast cancer research to giving back to organizations like KV Oasis and the Teen Resource Centre, their commitment to helping others has been constant. Their impact is even felt in quiet, meaningful spaces, like the Oncology and Palliative Care gardens at the Saint John Regional Hospital, which they have lovingly maintained for patients and families.

They are a close-knit circle of women who have stood beside one another through life’s highest highs and deepest losses. Through it all, they’ve built something lasting: a community rooted in friendship, resilience, and generosity.

This is what community looks like.

As we celebrate 50 years of community impact, we are proud to look back on stories like this, where generosity, connection, and local leadership come together to create lasting change.
