Joseph Sarto Hickey was born in 1945 in Saint John, New Brunswick. He attended Saint John Vocational School and then apprenticed in carpentry with his father at the Sarto J. Hickey and Sons Ltd. Company. He later became the owner of S.J. Hickey and Sons Ltd. He took great pleasure in his work and was involved in many construction projects in Saint John and throughout New Brunswick and he also did wonderful custom work. He was an excellent carpenter, builder and mentor, and was known for his exceptional work ethic.

Joe was also a kind and generous soul. He gave whatever he could to help others, especially those in need. He loved being outdoors in the woods, on the water, in the marsh and in the field.

Joe passed away on October 21, 2019. His family has established this fund in his memory. Joe’s legacy is his kindness and generosity. It is appropriate that the Joseph Sarto Hickey Carpentry Bursary will provide financial support for students from Greater Saint John that are enrolled in a Carpentry program at the New Brunswick Community College.

The Community Foundation is honoured to be entrusted with this important fund.
