The Gail B. Kaye Fund

Born in Saint John in 1918, Gail B. Kaye spent much of her early years travelling and experiencing life with her family. A lover of history and artistic pursuits, Gail was proud of her Saint John Loyalist roots, and a proud Canadian.

From the time Gail was a small child, her father was a member of the Canadian military, and this meant the family was often posted to various cities throughout the country. After many years in many cities, the family settled in Toronto for Gail’s first year of schooling, but shortly after they picked up for an adventure across the pond, to spend time travelling abroad.

After seven years living abroad with her family, Gail and her parents returned to Saint John and Gail enrolled at Netherwood School in Rothesay. Upon graduation in 1936, Gail attended The Ontario College of Art.

Following the completion of her third year at OCA in 1939, Gail returned to Saint John after World War II was declared. In 1943, Gail enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force.

In the years after the war, Gail made her life in Saint John – pursuing her love of art and writing, and eventually meeting and marrying her husband, Arthur Brown “Brownie” Lawton Pipes, in 1976. Happily married until his death in 1986, they shared their love for each other, their love for their Loyalist heritage, and their love of writing, and wrote a book entitled Loyalists All – telling the story of many Saint John Loyalist families.

Following her death in 2011, Gail’s family members created a permanently endowed fund, entrusted to The Community Foundation, as part of its common fund.
