The Dr. Florence M. Christie Fund
The Saint John Volunteer Centre, founded in 1975, ceased operations in 2020 and established the Dr. M. Christie Memorial Bursary in honor of Dr. Florence M. Christie. The bursary supports a mature female graduate from Greater Saint John with financial need, volunteer experience, pursuing post-secondary education at UNB Saint John.
The Saint John Volunteer Centre, a registered charity, was established in 1975 to service the volunteer needs of Greater Saint John by providing volunteer recruitment, referrals, consultation services and volunteer awareness.
Dr. Florence M. Christie, a graduate of Saint John High School and a long-time resident of Saint John, had a distinguished career in social services and was a founding member of both The Saint John Human Development Council and the Saint John Volunteer Centre.
In 2020, The Saint John Volunteer Centre ceased operations and transferred all remaining assets to the Community Foundation and established a permanent endowment fund in Dr. Christie’s name in recognition of her support of volunteerism for the purpose of securing the funding of the Dr. M. Christie Memorial Bursary and continuing the legacy of the Saint John Volunteer Centre.
Each year the bursary shall be in the minimum amount of $1500 and will be given to a mature female high school graduate who has been out of high school for at least one full year, is pursuing post-secondary education, either part-time or full-time, with demonstrated financial need and a history of volunteerism. The recipient will be a resident of Greater Saint John.

The Elmer and Jean Thompson Family Bursary Fund honors the Thompson family by providing an annual bursary to Saint John High School graduates pursuing post-secondary education, based on financial need, academics, leadership, and community involvement.
The John Kelly Recreation Bursary Fund supports students from Greater Saint John pursuing studies in kinesiology, physical education, recreation, or sports at the University of New Brunswick. Managed by the Greater Saint John Community Foundation, the fund ensures long-term support.
The Joe Flynn Memorial Bursary Fund supports graduates of St. Malachy’s High School with a history of participating in amateur sport. The fund also supports P.R.O. Kids, helping children and youth access equipment and registration fees for sports.
The Milton and Patricia Bassen Bursary Fund, established in 2013, awards annual bursaries to first-year students from Greater Saint John at UNB Saint John and St. Thomas University, based on financial need and academic merit.
