The Dr. David Stephen Legacy Fund
The Dr. David Stephen Legacy Fund supports initiatives in Greater Saint John that promote the prevention, awareness, and treatment of child maltreatment, with a focus on education and training for professionals working to protect children.
The Dr. David Stephen Legacy Fund
The Dr. David Stephen Legacy Fund was established to honour the life and enduring impact of Dr. David Stephen, a respected physician and nationally recognized expert in the field of child maltreatment prevention.
Dr. Stephen was instrumental in advancing interdisciplinary approaches to addressing child maltreatment in the Greater Saint John area, including his leadership in developing the Interdisciplinary Committee on Child Maltreatment. Tragically, his life was cut short in a car accident on February 14, 1990, at the age of 35, while he was travelling to testify in a child protection matter. In recognition of his extraordinary contributions to his community, patients, and the medical profession, Dr. Stephen was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit by the Medical Society.
To carry forward his legacy, the Dr. David Stephen Memorial Foundation was established in 1993 to promote education and professional development in the area of child maltreatment prevention. In partnership with the Greater Saint John Community Foundation, the Memorial Foundation created this permanent endowment fund to ensure long-term, sustainable support for this vital work.
